The Blessing We Want Lives on the Altar We Avoid

Sermon “Blessing Without Repentance” A Question God Refuses to Answer

Delivered: January 4, 2026 · Watch on YouTube

We often ask God to bless what He calls us to crucify. Scripture shows why grace empowers repentance and how marriages and singles can walk into aligned blessing—without fantasy checklists or loopholes.

We want approval as much as we want love. That ache drives many of our prayers— and our compromises. We ask for peace while preserving the very patterns that produce turmoil. The Bible doesn’t leave us room for a “blessing without repentance” plan.

Paul speaks with clarity: God’s will is our sanctification (1 Thess. 4). Porneia—any sexual intimacy outside marriage—cannot be baptized by tears or intentions. Grace does not excuse rebellion; grace empowers departure. Hebrews 13 guards the marriage bed; Galatians 6 warns against sowing to the flesh and expecting a harvest of peace.

Marriage isn’t a shortcut around the cross. Jesus commands daily self‑denial for every disciple (Luke 9:23). In covenant life that looks like Ephesians 5: mutual submission, husbands loving like Christ (initiating sacrifice, prayer, apology), wives responding with honor and partnership. Proverbs 31 isn’t a premarital checklist; it’s a harvest portrait—fruit formed over years in the greenhouse of safety and honor, not pressure and comparison.

How do we move toward blessing? 1) Repent concretely. Confess sin, cut off access, change rhythms, seek counsel. 2) Practice mutual submission. Husbands go first in sacrificial love; wives bring courageous, honoring partnership. 3) Create safety. No weaponizing Scripture, no contempt, no silent treatment; pray daily together. 4) Measure obedience, not convenience. Blessing follows alignment. Zacchaeus came down from the tree and hosted Jesus. We come down from pride and compromise—and find that repentance opens the windows of heaven.
